Richard (Rick) Gibson

Inventor and Technology Leader for 40 years

Richard is a technology pioneer who established himself in the industry when key punch cards were used to deliver instructions to computers.  He worked on the earliest mainframes, the initial portable microcomputers, and the first desktop PCs.  His expertise has been seminal in the expansion of technology across the globe.

During the past 16 years Richard has led international teams of professionals at Compaq/Hewlett Packard, resulting in stronger eCommerce strategies, exponential sales growth, and increased marketing exposure.  He actively promoted collaboration in the development and execution of online purchasing solutions that resulted in higher customer satisfaction, engagement, and sales.  Richard managed large-scale global product releases that translated business objectives into tangible results, ensuring product features and functionality achieved targeted objectives for quality improvement and technological advancement.

Richard is now partnering with Ron Klein, THE GRANDFATHER OF POSSIBILITIES™, to improve the lives of people with visual impairments.  The ELI system uses a smart phone and coded adhesive labels to allow for easy identification of objects within one’s environment.  He is working to expand the usage of the ELI label for both public and private groups using the latest cloud technologies.

Richard and his wife Jan reside in Austin, Texas.  Together they work with entrepreneurs and inventors to support their intellectual property and product creations and assist in getting these to market.  Richard and Jan help clients analyze their business models and overcome challenges, providing them with answers and solutions for taking their ventures to the next level.

Career Highlights

The one key take-away for me was the foundational process of demonstrating credibility which is the key to gaining others’ acceptance and support of the team as I am dependent upon others for success. My personal and professional credibility ultimately determines how people respond to me and how effective I will be as a leader.

Credibility consists of trust, authenticity, transparency, listening, being responsive and words of affirmation.  Of all of these, trust is the most critical driver as the basis for honest and straightforward communications to stakeholders and the teams.

Personal and professional credibility determines how people respond to you and how effective you will be as a leader.  My team observes words and actions. As a leader, I understand that I am working for the team objectives and goals and I must continually reinforce them in both words and actions.

Creating a positive environment includes working with team members to create the ground rules (a playbook) in expectations regarding performance, accountability, decision-making and problem resolution. This also includes mentoring my team in how to effectively address issues and the importance of communication.

Addressing issues and actions are part of the daily balance to support keeping the team moving forward. I work hard to insulate the team from interference from a variety of sources to ensure that the team receives the visibility and creates and environment that supports their empowerment. Communications is critical to reach consensus in the project goals and objectives. My team’s success and failures are the responsibility of my leadership.

Led organization in sales and revenue growth through building strategic alliances that create viable projects with new and existing customers in global eCommerce for 15 years. Managed a 30-100-person team of delivery managers, project managers and consultants, including global business management as well as recruiting, performance reviews, and compensation evaluation. Experience running success programs for SaaS businesses with experience in software sales and Customer Success.

Created and executed strategy that produced direct online sales growth in 2000-2002 at 1000%. Revenue increased from $100m to $2.1b in 2 years resulting in becoming a top ten site for online sales in North America from #110 through building relationships internally and externally with customers.

  • Created and Managed the Office of Release Management (PMO) and all the activities of large releases within virtual teams that required coordination in all aspects of a product releases.

  • Lead teams in consolidation of 85 data centers worldwide into six larger centers located in three U.S. cities: Atlanta, Georgia, and Houston and Austin, Texas.
  • Led the day to day management of data center implementations, release management, managed ticketing system for internal and external issues and responsiveness, fail-over and redundant server planning, managed dev-ops teams globally.
